# What is an AI copilot? Definition and right instinct vs wrong instinct

> An AI copilot is an assistant that suggests, proposes, and completes actions to the user, who keeps control of the final decision and execution. It is distinct from the AI agent, which executes autonomously. The copilot is a prudent mode of use, the agent a delegated mode of use.

## Definition
The term copilot established itself in 2023-2024 to designate AI assistants integrated into existing work environments: GitHub Copilot (code suggestions in the editor), Microsoft 365 Copilot (suggestions in Word, Excel, Outlook), Cursor (AI-native code editor), Gemini in Google Workspace. Three properties characterise a copilot. Suggestion rather than execution: the copilot proposes, the user validates or rejects. Native integration: it inserts itself into a tool the user already masters, without changing their workflow. Limited context: it sees what is displayed on screen or in the open file, no more. This last property radically distinguishes the copilot from the AI agent, which can access an entire system (files, calendar, browser, other applications) and execute action sequences without validation at each step. The copilot is AI in prudent mode, the agent in delegated mode.

## Example
Illustrative case. An 800-employee mid-cap deploys two complementary tools. Microsoft 365 Copilot for the 350 tertiary collaborators: email summary suggestions, first-draft document generation, Excel formulas proposed by dialogue. Cost: $30 per user per month (enterprise offer, annual commitment; the $21 Copilot Business offer is limited to 300 users), or $126,000 per year. GitHub Copilot Enterprise for the 80 developers: code auto-completion, test generation, pull request suggestions. Cost: $39 per user per month, or $37,440 per year; since 1 June 2026, chat and agents consume AI Credits, while code completions remain included. Total: about $163,000 annual. To measure the return, the company times a few repetitive tasks before and after deployment. Public benchmark: in randomised trials covering 4,867 developers, access to GitHub Copilot increased completed tasks by 26%.

## For a leader
Deploying an AI copilot without distinguishing its operating mode from that of an autonomous agent. Believing that because the tool is integrated into Microsoft 365 or VS Code, it “knows” how to do the work in place of the collaborator. Frequent consequences: disappointed users (“it doesn't really do the work”), lack of discipline on output validation, drift towards blind delegation that produces invisible errors in official documents or production code. | Framing the copilot as an assistance tool that requires intact business competence from the collaborator. Explicitly training on three practices: re-reading each suggestion before validation, flagging imprecise outputs for future improvement, sharing good formulations in the team. Measuring the gain on precise and reproducible tasks rather than global promises. Reassessing after 3 months whether the cost/benefit ratio per user remains positive, without naivety on fashion effects.

## FAQ

**What is the difference between a copilot and an AI agent?**
The copilot suggests, proposes and completes: the user keeps control of the final decision and of execution. The AI agent executes autonomously and can access an entire system (files, calendar, browser, other applications) without validation at each step. The copilot is AI in prudent mode, the agent in delegated mode.

**Which copilots are the most widespread?**
The term established itself in 2023-2024 for assistants integrated into existing work tools: GitHub Copilot (code suggestions in the editor), Microsoft 365 Copilot (Word, Excel, Outlook), Claude Code (developer assistant in the CLI), Cursor (AI-native code editor) and Google Workspace AI.

**What properties characterise a copilot?**
Three. Suggestion rather than execution: it proposes, the user validates or rejects. Native integration: it fits into a tool the user already masters, without changing their workflow. Limited context: it only sees what is displayed on screen or in the open file, no more.

**What does a copilot deployment cost, and what should you expect?**
As an order of magnitude, Microsoft 365 Copilot is $30 per user per month on the enterprise offer, GitHub Copilot Enterprise $39. On the gain side, the most solid public benchmark comes from randomised trials covering 4,867 developers: access to GitHub Copilot increased completed tasks by 26%. Measure your own on a few repetitive tasks, before and after deployment.

**What mistake should you avoid when deploying a copilot?**
Believing that, because it is integrated into Microsoft 365 or VS Code, it does the work in place of the employee. That illusion leads to blind delegation and invisible errors in official documents or production code. A copilot requires intact business competence: re-read each suggestion before validating, and measure the gain on precise tasks.
